On this episode of CreatureGeek, Frank and I welcome Matt Winston of the Stan Winston School of Character Arts. We talk a lot about the school, growing up around such iconic makeup and designs. Matt also shares Len’s real name for the first time on any podcast.
Thanks to Tested.com for giving CreatureGeek a home!
On this episode of CreatureGeek, FX legend Steve Johnson stops by for a candid chat about the industry, effects and so, so much more. We also chat about his new effects house Brick and Mortar. (Some content NSFW.)
On this episode of CreatureGeek, Frank and Len continue a conversation started by Adam Savage on “Still Untitled” about what are the best makeups in TV history. We discuss a bunch of shows. Did we miss any? Sound off in the comments!
So, as we posted Frank’s first foray into makeup, I felt it only right (plus we said we would on show 1) that I should post my first foray into makeup. This is around Halloween 1982. I used the Dick Smith TV/Movie Horror Makeup Kit that I got for Christmas a few years earlier. I remember trying to work the Flexi-Flesh material and by the time I was using this stuff, I ran out of the flesh colored blending stick, so I had to use this blue color that I found somewhere. Whatever I couldn’t color, I just covered up with fake blood. Anyhow, I have a few other photos, but those will have to saved for another time.
On our first episode, Frank talks about his earliest forays into makeup and creature design. He just sent me some photos from the “good old days”. You gotta admit, this is pretty good stuff from a kid.
As soon as I get back home to my mom’s place, I’ll post my makeups as well. They are nowhere as good as Frank’s. On second thought, maybe I won’t embarrass myself.
Today is a really big day for Frank and I because our new podcast CreatureGeek is live today! Not only is it a real thing, but right out of the gate, we have a a big brand name behind us: Tested.com. As you may or may not know, Tested.com is a website affiliated with Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman. It is run by Norm Chan and Will Smith, And it is awesome. And we couldn’t be happier to be a part of the Tested family. Both Frank and I are honored to know that this crew believes in us enough to support us. Thanks so much.
So here’s the deal: Right now, CreatureGeek is a semi-regular podcast that will be be done in “seasons”. Each season will be 8 regular episodes (although we may do a Bonus cast from time to time). We’ll air every other Friday on Tested and here. If people like the show, we’ll be back for Season 2. And so on and so on.
So please let us know how you like the show, Leave comments here or at Tested so Frank and I can adjust accordingly. Frank and I have recorded almost the entire first season already just because of Frank’s crazy production schedule, so we may not be able to implement a lot of changes right from the start. But believe me, we will be listening and taking notes.
That’s it. Frank and I are happy to be doing this show and we hope you enjoy it!
It’s the first episode of CreatureGeek! This is the podcast about SFX and makeup from a fan and pro perspective. On this episode, Frank and I find our footing, podcast-wise, and chat about our credentials, our first forays into makeup and special effects and more. Frank also shares some stories about legendary makeup artist, Dick Smith. Listen in, enjoy and let us hear your feedback!
Also, a big thanks to Tested.com for giving us a home and bringing us into their family of podcasts.
Frank and I are getting ready to record episodes of CreatureGeek very soon (as in this week) and we’d love to hear some feedback from you. Who would you love to hear as a guest on the show? What kind of topics would you like us to chat about? Any movies you’d like us to talk about? Let us know! Your feedback will help us develop future episodes.
We have some really exciting news to share with you, but we can’t share it just yet. But don’t fret! We’ll be able to let you in all the big doings in just a few days. Until then, sound off in the comments and help us develop new episodes of Creature Geek!
